Cannabinol sleep gummies show signs of dependence in mice

Researchers at the University of Connecticut found that repeated exposure to CBN caused mice to develop tolerance and physical withdrawal symptoms like head twitching and paw fluttering. The compound also triggered responses similar to THC in mice trained to recognize psychoactive effects. While marketed as a gentle, non-habit-forming sleep aid, CBN appears to interact with the same biological systems that drive drug dependence.

It is a familiar pattern: a new supplement is sold widely before its long-term effects are understood. These findings are limited to animal models and do not prove that humans will experience dependence at commercial doses, but they are reason enough to skip the marketing claims. Until human studies catch up, treating over-the-counter cannabinoids with the same caution as prescription sedatives seems prudent.
